SEE & EXPERIENCE

Places to put on your list

Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa
Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa

Asakusa & Sensō-ji

Kaminarimon’s great lantern marks the approach to the temple, reached through Nakamise’s shopping street. Notice traditional objects and details on the gates before exploring the surroundings of Sensō-ji. The Sumida riverbanks provide a change of pace after the busy lanes; respect prayer spaces and follow any signs about photography during your visit.

Meiji-jingū & Shibuya

Meiji-jingū’s wooded approaches lead to a shrine removed from the immediate bustle of the streets. Harajuku and Shibuya reveal shops, cafés and the famous crossing. The contrast between these atmospheres is the attraction: choose the areas that interest you, keep crossings clear and observe the shrine’s customs rather than rushing between photo stops.

Marunouchi & Ginza

Tokyo Station and Marunouchi’s streets reveal the central city’s architectural and commercial character. Near the Imperial Palace, check which gardens are accessible; in Ginza, department stores and contemporary façades reward a closer look too. Identify your station exit before walking so that you begin on the side that suits the places you want to explore.

Things to do with family

Dinosaurs and science in Ueno

The National Museum of Nature and Science introduces Japan and the natural world through collections and fossils. Choose a theme with the children, then look for a few examples together. Check the museum map and language resources before visiting; Ueno Park offers a chance to take a break outside afterwards.

Look closely at the Tokyo National Museum

Ceramics, works of art and swords offer a tangible introduction to Japan’s artistic history. With children, look for animals, patterns or materials rather than reading every label. Select a few rooms according to the collections on display, alternating close observation with breaks to keep the discoveries enjoyable for everyone.

The gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen

Move between Japanese garden compositions, landscaped spaces and broad lawns to discover different approaches to garden design. Colours change with the season, although a particular blossom is never guaranteed. Choose a few paths to explore together, checking entry arrangements and the garden’s rules before your visit to Shinjuku Gyoen.

Walk into Mount Takao’s scenery

Woodland trails and Yakuō-in temple reveal a different side of Tokyo’s surroundings. Choose a route for your fitness and the weather; using an uphill lift does not remove all walking towards the higher areas. Bring water, suitable shoes and enough daylight for the return journey from the mountain.

The story behind the city

Formerly Edo, the city became the centre of Tokugawa shogunal power in the early seventeenth century. Renamed Tokyo in 1868, it developed into a modern capital. Rebuilding and innovation reshaped its skyline, while temples, gardens and older neighbourhoods preserve memories of Edo.

Practical pointers for your stay

Getting around and enjoying the city

A compatible transit card helps with trains and metro journeys; networks connect but trips can be long. Carry some cash, translated addresses and a transport app. Haneda and Narita are in different locations: check the last train after a late flight.

Seasons & weather

Spring and autumn are often the most comfortable seasons for walking. Cherry blossom timing changes each year. Summer is hot and humid with a rainy period, and typhoons can disrupt travel. Winter is cooler and often suitable for urban sightseeing.
