SEE & EXPERIENCE

Places to put on your list

Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge

Lower Manhattan & Brooklyn Bridge

Lower Manhattan’s streets contrast the city’s historic core with financial institutions and tall towers. Walking across Brooklyn Bridge reveals its cables and views over the harbour. On the Brooklyn side, DUMBO’s waterfront provides another angle on the skyline. Keep pedestrian routes clear when stopping for photographs and choose the crossing direction that suits your plans.

Midtown

Grand Central, the New York Public Library and the skyscrapers reveal different sides of New York’s architecture. Look up at façades as you move between the broad avenues; the streets themselves are part of the attraction. For a panorama, choose an observation deck for its outlook and the weather, checking building access arrangements separately.

Liberty Island & Ellis Island

Liberty Island brings you close to the statue and its museum, while Ellis Island’s immigration museum explores the human stories behind arrival in New York Harbour. Book the authorised ferry and distinguish island admission from pedestal or crown access. Plan around the access you have selected rather than assuming every part of the statue is included.

Things to do with family

Central Park
Central Park

Play and explore Central Park

Choose a playground on the park map to suit the children’s ages, then pair it with a short walk. Compare trees, birds and the shapes of surrounding buildings to turn the journey into an exploration. The park is large, so identify convenient entry and exit points before setting off.

Discover the American Museum of Natural History

Dinosaur fossils, animals and collections about our planet let you follow the interests of different family members. Ask the children to choose a theme, then examine a few specimens closely. Select manageable galleries and check the arrangements for any experiences or exhibitions that require a separate reservation.

TIME TOGETHER

Ideas for couples

Skyline views from Brooklyn Bridge Park

Walk beside the water and watch Manhattan’s towers change perspective between the gardens and piers. Take time to find a bench or a spot to pause together instead of treating every view as a photo stop. Bring a layer for the season and check your return route from Brooklyn.

Share your favourite discoveries at the Met

Each choose a collection or exhibition, then introduce your favourite works to one another. The Met lets you move between cultures and periods without leaving Fifth Avenue. Check the map and open galleries before visiting; the edge of Central Park provides an easy transition back outside afterwards.

The story behind the city

The region was home to the Lenape before European colonisation. The Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam became New York under English rule. Its port, immigration and economic growth then shaped the five boroughs and their diversity. Ellis Island provides context for part of that story.

Practical pointers for your stay

Getting around and enjoying the city

Use the subway between neighbourhoods and walk within them. Displayed prices may exclude tax, and tipping is customary for many services. JFK, Newark and LaGuardia have different transport connections. Avoid repeatedly crossing the city in a single day.

Seasons & weather

Seasons are distinct: cold winters and often hot, humid summers. Spring and autumn suit walking, though temperatures can change quickly. Keep indoor options for rain, heat or very cold weather.
