Montpellier
Places, experiences, your kind of trip.
The Écusson’s lanes, terraces and museums form Montpellier’s heart. Nearby lagoons, beaches and the Pic Saint-Loup hills bring variety to a longer stay.
SEE & EXPERIENCE
Places to put on your list

Écusson & Place de la Comédie
Place de la Comédie introduces Montpellier through the opera house façade, Three Graces fountain and lively terraces. The Écusson’s streets then bring a more intimate scale, with narrow passages and smaller squares. Look up at balconies and decorative details; explore private courtyards through authorised visits rather than assuming that every doorway is open.
Peyrou & the Arceaux aqueduct
The royal promenade at Peyrou combines open space, an equestrian statue and a monumental water tower. From its end, the Arceaux aqueduct draws the eye towards the surrounding landscape. Come for the perspectives as much as the monuments. Softer light suits photography, while the exposed areas call for sun protection in warm weather.
Saint-Pierre Cathedral & Jardin des Plantes
Saint-Pierre’s monumental porch and substantial pillars immediately distinguish the cathedral among the old quarter’s streets. Nearby, the Jardin des Plantes reflects Montpellier’s medical and botanical traditions. Combine architectural observation with a walk among the plant collections, checking access arrangements separately for the place of worship and the university garden before setting out.

DISCOVER TOGETHER
Things to do with family

An observation game at the Fabre Museum
At the Fabre Museum, choose a few portraits and landscapes instead of trying to see everything. Ask children to find a colour, imagine a character’s thoughts or compare light between paintings. Works by Bazille, Courbet and Soulages offer very different conversations; also check the museum’s activities for children.
Observe nature in the Jardin des Plantes
Turn the Jardin des Plantes paths into an observation trail, comparing leaf shapes, bark, shadows and names on labels. Let children sketch a favourite plant without picking it. This gentle discovery makes a welcome pause between monuments; check the university garden’s access arrangements before visiting.
TIME TOGETHER
Ideas for couples
Enjoy the light at Peyrou
At Peyrou, take time to appreciate the water tower, the aqueduct’s alignment and distant hills. Changing light makes this a lovely place to linger together. Continue towards the Arceaux if you feel like a longer walk, or simply enjoy the spacious setting without turning it into a fixed route.

Small squares and cafés in the Écusson
Leave Place de la Comédie to explore the Écusson’s narrow streets, old façades, shops and smaller squares. Choose a café or terrace as you wander, then look for a favourite detail each. It is an easy way to enjoy Montpellier’s atmosphere while leaving room for unexpected discoveries.

Explore family activities ↑The story behind the city
A medieval centre of trade and learning, Montpellier is closely connected with medicine and university life. The Écusson’s mansions, the Peyrou and contemporary districts show how the city expanded over the centuries.
Practical pointers for your stay
Getting around and enjoying the city
Explore the historic centre on foot. Trams reach other districts, but the beach still requires a planned onward journey: Montpellier is not directly on the coast. Try market produce and choose between the coast and hills to suit your interests.
Seasons & weather
Summers are hot and often dry; spring and early autumn suit sightseeing. Heavy rain can occur, particularly in autumn. In summer, walk early and check conditions before outdoor activities.
