SEE & EXPERIENCE

Places to put on your list

Westminster & South Bank

Around Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey reveal London’s political and royal character. Westminster Bridge brings the palace façades, Thames and London Eye into view together. Continue on foot along the South Bank for different perspectives; entering the abbey is a separate visit, so check its visitor arrangements before deciding to include it.

Tower of London & Tower Bridge

The fortress and bridge tell very different stories: royal power on one side and Victorian engineering on the other. At Tower Bridge, the high walkways and original engine rooms add context to the street-level crossing. The two landmarks have separate tickets, so decide which interiors interest you before making reservations for either attraction.

Covent Garden & Borough Market

Covent Garden draws visitors with shopping streets, theatres and the atmosphere around its covered market. Borough Market, beside London Bridge, focuses on producers, specialist food and ready-to-eat dishes. They are separate neighbourhoods: choose according to whether you feel like browsing shops or tasting food, and check the market’s trading days before travelling.

Explore the British Museum with a trail

Download one of the museum’s family trails to give the objects and display cases a common thread. Let each child choose a discovery to explain: a creature, a garment or an invention. Keep the selection of galleries manageable and include a break, using the trail as a prompt for conversation.

Fossils and animals at the Natural History Museum

Dinosaurs and natural history collections provide plenty to observe, compare and question. Ask the children to look for differences between a fossil and a reconstruction, or between two animals. Choose galleries on the museum map before entering and check temporary exhibition arrangements separately from the main collection.

TIME TOGETHER

Ideas for couples

Greenwich Park
Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park panoramas

Make your way towards the hill near the Observatory for views of historic buildings and the skyline beyond the Thames. Continue along the park’s paths for a green escape together. Bring an extra layer for the wind and choose how far to walk according to the weather.

A cultural stroll along the South Bank

Follow the Thames, watching the views towards Westminster and the cultural venues along the south bank. Add a performance or film that appeals to you both from the local programme. Check the language and booking requirements, then leave room for a meal or simply watching the river together.

The story behind the city

Founded in Roman times as Londinium, London grew as a port, trading centre and seat of power. The City preserves its historic core, while Westminster tells the story of monarchy and Parliament. Victorian expansion and migration shaped today’s culturally diverse metropolis.

Practical pointers for your stay

Getting around and enjoying the city

The Underground and buses make getting around easier; use the same payment method when tapping in and out. London is large: group sights by area. Try markets, pubs and neighbourhood cuisines. London’s airports are widely separated.

Seasons & weather

Weather is changeable throughout the year. Spring and summer provide longer daylight for parks; autumn brings colour. In winter, combine shorter walks with museums and theatre. A light waterproof layer is useful even in summer.
